Characteristics of the 100 largest modern zoonotic disease outbreaks

Abstract: Zoonotic disease outbreaks are an important threat to human health and numerous drivers have been recognized as contributing to their increasing frequency. Identifying and quantifying relationships between drivers of zoonotic disease outbreaks and outbreak severity is critical to developing targeted zoonotic disease surveillance and outbreak prevention strategies. However, quantitative studies of outbreak drivers on a global scale are lacking. Attributes of countries such as press freedom, surveillance capabil… Show more

“…An analysis of the hundred largest zoonotic outbreaks over the past 30 years points to agricultural intensification as a primary driver of the resurgence of older pathogens such as anthrax, brucellosis, and salmonellosis ( 41 ). All the measures that we propose to reduce novel pathogen emergence will also reduce the re-emergence of pathogens that have plagued humans and our domesticated animals for millennia.…”

“…It is almost certain that large-scale zoonotic disease outbreaks will almost certainly continue to occur regularly in the future. Th erefore, a better general understanding of the factors aff ecting variation in the severity of outbreaks is critical for well-being of the global community (Stephens et al, 2021). En-demic zoonoses continue to be relatively neglected, oft en with a lack of local and international realization of the extent to which they impact human health and well-being.…”

“…Stephens et al [91] present a perspective focused on the prospects and challenges of quantifying variation in the drivers of zoonotic outbreaks. Many factors such as deforestation, poverty and international trade and travel are thought to drive zoonotic outbreaks (reviewed in [92][93][94]).…”
