Characterization of carbon fractal-like aggregates by size distribution measurements and theoretical calculations

Abstract: The structural characteristics of carbon nanoparticles synthesized by a spark discharge source were investigated by combined measurements of polydisperse number and Fuchs surface-area distributions against equivalent particle mobility and aerodynamic diameters. The number and Fuchs surface area distribution measurements were conducted by a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and a cascade epiphaniometer (CEPI), respectively. The CEPI-measured total Fuchs surface area and the Fuchs surface area calculated f… Show more

“…Fuchs surface area is calculated as 26 : where is the dimensionless momentum scattering coefficient, the gas mean free path, the particle Knudsen number, the corresponding Cunningham slip correction factor and the number concentration in each size bin (i) as obtained by means of the SMPS. Then, the total Fuchs surface area is calculated as: …”

“…This literature survey for the fractal dimension shows that it ranges from 1.60 to 2.16 for flame-generated soot depending on the measurement techniques and flame conditions. For spark-generated carbon, the mass-mobility fractal dimension was measured to be 2.16 using a combination of a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and a cascade epiphaniometer (CEPI) [31], and was 1.60 measured with static light scattering [32]. In the present study, the fractal dimension was estimated with curve-fitting using the existing effective densities as a function of mobility diameter.…”

“…50 al., 2019). Moreover, increasing mass concentrations of BC are degrading air quality and causing adverse effects on human health (Pöschl., 2005;Janssen et al, 2011).High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of BC samples from ambient and laboratory studies revealed that BC particles comprise agglomerates made from numerous graphitic soot spherules (Betrancourt et al, 2017;Gini et al, 2016). Over time, BC agglomerates undergo complex changes in their size, 55…”
