“…Figure shows the variation of normalε˙oi depending on the depth for young and old dentin. Young dentin shows a considerable reduction on normalε˙oi —about 2 orders of magnitude—from inner to outer dentin, which was previously explained as being mainly attributed to the amount of type I collagen of the tissue (higher values of normalε˙oi for areas of higher collagen content and vice versa) . Unexpectedly, old dentin showed to have just a small reduction on this parameter from inner to outer dentin, keeping behaviour close to the one found for inner dentin.…”

“…They are obtained by subtracting the stiffness and damping moduli of the sensor from the measured stiffness and damping moduli, which are the combined values of the sensor and the sample (Hayot et al, 2012). In stiff (mainly elastic) samples such as dentine, the substrate absorbs stress after loading, but there will be negligible dissipation of energy by heat and, thus, the damping modulus of the sample is very close to zero (Chuang et al, 2015;Lakes et al, 2009). Consequently, at certain positions within our samples, the actual value of the loss modulus cannot be obtained with confidence, as the damping modulus of the sample is masked by the damping modulus of the sensor; thereby, these values are not presented in the manuscript.…”
