Characterization of ZHY and TCA/ZHY Catalysts for Hydration of α-Pinene

Abstract: Abstract-The TCA/ZHY catalyst (Si/Al = 3.25) was prepared by impregnation of the Zeolite HY (Si/Al = 2.89) with amount of an aquous solution of TCA. The physico-chemical properties were investigated by XRD, 29 Si and 27 Al MAS NMR, BET, SEM, NH 3 -TPD and FT-IR spectroscopy of pyridine adsorbed. The activity of catalytic of these catalysts has been carried out over the liquid-phase hydration of α-pinene to give α-terpineol as a major product and hydrocarbon as a minor products.Index Terms-TCA/ZHY, α-pinene, α… Show more

“…Taking into account the pore size of the tested samples ( Figure 2 , Table 2 ), i.e., 0.4–0.7 nm, 0.7–1.0 nm, 1.1–1.4 nm, and 1.5–2.5 nm, and the number of pores, we can conclude that the C_AC and O_AC samples had the largest number of pores with a size of 0.7–1.0, 1.1–1.4 nm and 1.5–2.5 nm, whereas the S_AC sample had the largest number of pores with a size of 0.4–0.7 nm. The size of the alpha-pinene molecule is about 0.7 nm [ 95 ]; thus, pores with a size of 0.7–1.0 and 1.1–1.4 nm or larger are of greatest importance for the isomerization process of this compound. The results in Figure 2 , thus, confirm that the catalyst samples C_AC and O_AC allowed diffusion of alpha-pinene molecules into the interior of the pores, where the investigated reaction took place, and that these catalyst samples should be the most active in the process.…”

“…Wijayati et al prepared a catalyst by impregnating trichloroacetic acid (TCA) on a Y-zeolite molecular sieve for the synthesis of terpineol from α-pinene [ 5 ]. Wijayati et al also prepared a TCA/ZHY catalyst via impregnation to achieve terpineol synthesis [ 6 ], and Ávila et al prepared catalysts for α-pinene hydration by impregnating TCA on SiO 2 , TiO 2 , and ZrO 2 ·nH 2 O [ 7 ]. Sekerová et al treated montmorillonite K10 with several acids (H 2 SO 4 , HCl, HNO 3 , and MCA) to catalyze the hydration of α-pinene [ 8 ], and Comelli et al prepared a catalyst for α-pinene hydration by impregnating natural clay with MCA [ 9 ].…”
