Chasing a ghost: notes on the present distribution and conservation of the sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys) in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa

Abstract: The West-African sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys) is threatened by habitat loss, hunting for meat consumption, and mortality during crop-foraging events. The species’ overall demographic trend is unknown. Presence and distribution in Guinea-Bissau, a country neighbored by Senegal and Republic of Guinea, was confirmed in 1946 but the species was declared extinct in 1989 and not observed in subsequent countrywide expeditions. Narratives of its presence across southern Guinea-Bissau are scattered in reports and o… Show more

“…As computational intelligence [64], bioinformatics is the primary role of primate mitogenomics study [9], [65], [66], evolutionary study [67]- [69], phylogeography study [70]- [72], biodiversity study [73]- [75], distribution to conservation plan [76]- [78], as well as help the conservationist and geneticist to work together. Supriatna [79] stated that every single person would help and work together to save the biodiversity, including non-human primates (NHPs) species.…”

“…The mysterious arrival of the virus in Bissau was followed by an epidemic spread in 1955-1970 [1,2]. The existence of Cercocebus atys atys monkeys [28], and the high prevalence of HIV-2, in Guinea-Bissau corroborate recent arguments for an independent founding effect [29]. While the existence of nine HIV-2 strains [29,30] might indicate that SIVs 'jump easily' from sooty mangabeys, the absence of more global epidemics shows how hard they find it to both adapt and spread more widely among humans [31,32].…”

“…GB has a broad forested area and many emblematic and threatened species, including over 374 species of birds and 85 reptiles, and a high number of emblematic and threatened mammals (leopard, Panthera pardus , lion, Panthera leo , and elephant, Loxodonta africana ) (e.g., Brugiere et al, 2005). In particular, the country is a priority area for primate conservation, including the critically endangered Western chimpanzee ( Pan troglodytes verus ), a flagship for forest conservation, as well as for other nine species (Ferreira da Silva et al, 2020). Biodiversity conservation and ecotourism are nationally acknowledged as drivers for human and economic development (Word Bank, 2015).…”
