Chemical Composition, an Antioxidant, Cytotoxic and Microbiological Activity of the Essential Oil from the Leaves of Aeollanthus suaveolens Mart. ex Spreng

Abstract: Aeollanthus suaveolens species popularly known as catinga de mulata belongs to the Lamiaceae family. In the Amazon region, it is used in folk medicine for the treatment of gastritis, convulsions of epileptic origin, stomach pain and diarrhea in the form of tea and juice. Essential oils have analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activity. This study evaluated the chemical composition of the A. suaveolens essential oil, and its cytotoxic, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity on Artemia salina Leach. … Show more

“…The chemical compositions of the essential oils were determined by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometer (GC-MS) [ 17 ] on Shimadzu equipment, model CGMS-QP 2010 (Kyoto, Japan), on a DB-5HT column of the J & W Scientific brand, column 30 m, diameter 0.32 mm, film thickness 0.10 μm and nitrogen as carrier gas. The apparatus was operated under internal column pressure of 56.7 kPa, split ratio 1:20, gas flow in the column of 1.0 mL.min -1 (210 °C), injector temperature 220 °C, and the detector (CG-EM) of 240 °C.…”

“…The data in Table 3 show that the EO of P. cablin presents a LC 50 24.25 μg·mL −1 , p -value < 0.05 and coefficient of determination R 2 of 0.902. This value is above the toxicity standard of potassium dichromate with LC 50 of 12.60 μg·mL −1 , however, the EO of P. cablin has a high toxic action, because, according to Martins et al [16], pure substances extracted from plants are considered toxic when LC 50 < 100 μg·mL −1 , and nontoxic with LC 50 > 1000 μg·mL −1 .…”

“…The chemical composition of the EO was determined by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometer (GC-MS), using a model GCMS-QP 5050A, manufactured by Shimadzu company (Kyoto, Japan), under the following conditions: DB-5HT column of the brand J and W Scientific, with length of 30 m, diameter of 0.32 mm, film thickness 0.10 μm, and nitrogen as carrier gas, according to Martins et al [16].…”

“…Microorganisms compete with them for iron. It also has antimicrobial activity by detaching iron ions (Fe3+), which Gram-negative bacteria like Salmonella need (Martins et al 2016). Another is the complement C3, which is involved in immune defense and immune regulation in humans (Yan et al 2019).…”
