Chemiluminescence Determination of Sulfite in Sugar and Sulfur Dioxide in Air Using Ru(bipy)32+-K2S2O8 System

Abstract: A chemiluminescence (CL) detection method for the determination of sulfite is described. The light produced in the reaction of Ru(bipy)3 2+ (bipy=2,2¢-bipyridyl)-SO3 2--K2S2O8 is detected. The concentration of sulfite is proportional to the CL intensity in the range 1.5´10 -7 -1.0´10 -4 mol/l. The limit of detection is 4.1´10 -8 mol/l and the relative standard deviation is 4.3% for 2´10 -5 mol/l sulfite solution in 9 repeated measurements. This method has been successfully applied to the determination of sulfi… Show more

“…A variety of CL reactions have been used for the determination of sulphite in diverse matrices, including sugar, beers and wines with sub-micromolar limits of detection. Chemiluminescence produced from tris(2,2'bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) in the presence of either K 2 S 2 O 8 (125) or KMnO 4 (127) was used to quantify sulphite in sugar and sulphur dioxide in air (absorbed in triethanolamine) with interference from copper(II) and EDTA. Sulphite (detection limit 30 mg/mL) has also been determined in beers and wines using the auto-oxidation of sulphite sensitized by rhodamine 6G in the presence of Tween 80 surfactant micelles (146), with interference from sulphite, nitrite and ascorbic acid.…”

“…The method has been successfully applied to the determination of total sulfite in beverages. He et al [62] and Meng et al [63] determined the sulfite in sugar using Ru(bipy) 3 2+ -K 2 S 2 O 8 system and Ru(bipy) 3 2+ -KMnO 4 system, respectively. Lin and Hobo [64] developed the method for the determination of sulfite using Na 2 CO 3 -NaHCO 3 -Cu 2+ system.…”

“…This reagent was used as a powerful oxidant usually associated with photochemical generation of Ru(III) complexes. Many applications of the online photooxidation of ruthenium(II) complexes with peroxydisulphate have recently been reported (13,(33)(34)(35).…”
