Chiral Pesticides with Asymmetric Sulfur: Extraction, Separation, and Determination in Different Environmental Matrices

Abstract: Chiral pesticides with S atoms as asymmetric centers are gaining great importance in the search for new pesticides with new modes of action. As for the rest of the chiral pesticides, the determination of the stereoisomers separately has become crucial in the environmental risks assessment of these pesticides. Therefore, the development of suitable extraction and clean-up methods as well as efficient stereoselective analytical techniques for stereoisomers determination in environmental samples is essential. “…For instance, it has typically been found that the biodegradation of organic compounds by fungi, including pesticides, is a comparatively longer process and occasionally does not result in the entire elimination of contaminants [15]. The fact that different fungal strains have been found to only partially degrade pesticides is another disadvantage of fungal biodegradation [82]. It has occasionally been discovered that these secondary metabolites are significantly more toxic than the original chemicals [83].…”

“…The design of SFC-MS interfaces has been improved over the years and, with the advancement of column technology, namely the availability of sub-2 μm particle size ultra-highperformance columns, the SFC-MS technology proved to be a good tool for both separation and sample preparation [12][13][14]. There are examples of employing SFC-MS for the analysis of pesticides, plant materials, pharmaceuticals, or metabolomic studies [15][16][17][18][19][20][21].…”

“…The offline preconcentration method in CE is also known as the sample pretreatment method. At present, various sample preparation methods were used before CE analysis, mainly including ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) [15], microwave-assisted extraction [16], refluxing extraction [17], supercritical fluid extraction [18], and so forth. However, most of the methods tended to require large consumption of organic solvents, as well as difficulties in reaching satisfactory extraction efficiency [19].…”
