“…Although rps4 as well as trnL-F are classic markers in molecular phylogenetics of bryophytes, the two spacers separating rps4 from trnT and trnT from trnL have been largely ignored. Only the trnT-L IGS has been occasionally used with varying success exclusively on generic or population levels (e.g., Frey et al 1999;Pfeiffer et al 2004;). On deeper levels, however, Hernández-Maqueda et al (2008) were the first to successfully use both spacers combined with rps4 and trnL-F in a phylogenetic study on the Grimmiaceae, an approach that was followed here.…”

“…The liverwort genus Monoclea has a geographic distribution and pattern of genetic variation nearly identical to that of P. mnioides (Meißner et al 1998), suggesting a common Gondwanan history. Frey et al (1999) and Pfeiffer (2000) report Gondwanan divergence between populations of the mosses Lopidium concinnum and Hypopterigium rotulatum, respectively. In contrast to the molecular divergence found in P. mnioides and Monoclea, populations of L. concinnum and H. rotulatum disjunct between Australasia and South America are scarcely differentiated (0.2% and 0% sequence divergence, respectively).…”

“…Where two collections are listed for a population, sequences were derived from both collections to complete the dataset. Haplotype names correspond with those from Figure 2 taxa (Setoguchi et al 1997;Meißner et al 1998;Frey et al 1999;Pfeiffer 2000;Renner et al 2000), thus providing a range of estimated divergence values for comparison.…”

“…A molecular analysis can only state whether base sequences of certain genes of populations of the same species in disjunct populations are identical or not. Identical base sequences can, however, be the result of gene exchange but also of relict population, which have not undergone genetic changes since the separation of the populations (stenoevolution sensu Frey et al 1999). Additional arguments are required to decide whether the species are able for long distance dispersal or not tolerance to frost or UV-radiation, see van Zanten (1976van Zanten ( , 1978van Zanten ( , 1983van Zanten ( , 1984, sterility or rarety of sporulation, morphological arguments (spore size, cleistocarpy), habitats (epiphytes in the understory of forests as opposed to species from open habitats), life strategies (colonists vs. perennial stayers).…”

“…Attempts have been made to solve the question experimentally ( van Zanten 1976van Zanten , 1978van Zanten , 1983van Zanten , 1984 and very recently by molecular studies (Meißner et al 1998, Frey et al 1999, Stech et al 1999 Van Zanten (1976) tested 139 disjunct bryophyte species for their ability for long distance dispersal Blöcher & Frahm (germination experiments with wet-and dryfreezing). Amongst these species there were 38 species occurring in Chile and New Zealand.…”
