Cholesterol removal by Lactobacillus plantarum isolated from homemade fermented cream in Inner Mongolia of China

Abstract: A total of 38 strains were initially isolated from Jiaoke, a homemade traditional fermented cream, which was sourced from Inner Mongolia, China, and 6 strains were selected after screening, which was based on their cholesterol removal abilities. The Lactobacillus plantarum with the highest level of cholesterol removal from the media was identified using phenotypical characteristics and 16S rRNA sequences, and was named L. plantarum KLDS 1.0344. The mechanisms for cholesterol removal involved co-precipitation, … Show more

“…An amount of cholesterol retained in the cells was attributed to cholesterol assimilation of bacteria (Grill et al ., ). The no‐recovered part of cholesterol was attributed to degradation of cholesterol by bacterial cells (Guo et al ., ). The mechanisms of cholesterol removal from media were different in all assayed strains.…”

“…The main probiotics are lactic acid bacteria, such as Lactobacillus , Bifidobacterium and Enterococcus , which are inherent members in the gastrointestinal tract of human and animals. In general, these probiotic bacteria are also predominant organisms in the traditional fermented dairy products, such as Jiaoke , which is a homemade naturally fermented cream in Inner Mongolia of China (Guo et al ., ). Various strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium have been suggested to lower cholesterol levels in vitro or in vivo by different mechanisms (Huang et al ., 2010; 2014; Jeun et al ., ; Ooi and Liong, ; Ahire et al ., ; Bordoni et al ., ; Ebel et al ., ; Gorenjak et al ., ; Kim et al ., ).…”

“…Cholesterol lowering effect= (C-C')/C, where the concentrations of cholesterol existing in the supernatants of uninoculated and inoculated were C and C' (Guo et al, 2011). Cholesterol-lowering percentage by each Lactobacillus strain was also calculated as follow: % Cholesterol-lowering= [(cholesterol-lowering (µg/ mL)/cholesterol (µg/mL)] × 100%…”
