Chronic Low-Grade Inflammation in Childhood Obesity Is Associated with Decreased IL-10 Expression by Monocyte Subsets

Abstract: Chronic low-grade inflammation is related to the development of comorbidities and poor prognosis in obesity. Monocytes are main sources of cytokines and play a pivotal role in inflammation. We evaluated monocyte frequency, phenotype and cytokine profile of monocyte subsets, to determine their association with the pathogenesis of childhood obesity. Children with obesity were evaluated for biochemical and anthropometric parameters. Monocyte subsets were characterized by flow cytometry, considering cytokine produ… Show more

“…Taken together, our results are consistent with regulatory function for the identified TAPBP CpG sites with further experimental studies needed to confirm these findings. In addition to further interrogating the 700bp chr6 region contained within the HLA complex, evaluating whether these differentially methylated genes serve as biomarkers of immune dysfunction or as early indicators of an already altered state of inflammation might contribute to early obesity risk assessment [40,41].…”

“…This suggests that the activation of platelets might play a role in the development of PACG. Monocytes are the main source of cytokines and play a pivotal role in inflammation [ 28 ]. The level of monocyte was also increased in patients with PACG, although it was not associated with PACG severity.…”

“…In Alabama, more than 36% of children are overweight and obese, and it is the 5th highest ranked state in obesity [3]. Obesity is typically characterized by an increase in body fat mass [4]. The common causes of childhood obesity include diet, behavioral, and genetic factors [5].…”
