ABSTRACT. We studied the reproductive biology of Megalobulimus paranaguensis (Pilsbry & Ihering, 1900), a large and long-lived land gastropod from the Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil. The study was conducted at an urban park in the city of Santos, state of São Paulo. For 4 years, we counted the egg postures and annual eclosion rate of 32 captive snails and looked for associations between egg posture and the climatical variables of the period. The annual mean posture of 8.7 eggs per snail obtained in our results is a small number, but typical of Brazilian macromollusks. The annual eclosion rate was 31%. The beginning of the annual activity period of snails occurred in the middle of March, and lasted 33.97±3.02 weeks. The dormancy period started in the beginning of November, and lasted 18.39±3.11 weeks. There were two egg posture peaks, a minor peak between March and May, and a major peak between August and November, with greater values in September. Megalobulimus paranaguensis has a well-defi ned seasonal reproductive pattern infl uenced by environmental temperature and temperature range. Furthermore, in this snail, reproduction is negatively infl uenced by temperature increasing and temperature range.

ABSTRACT. Effect of photoperiod on the life cycle and shell morphology of Dysopeas muibum (Mollusca, Subulinidae) under laboratory conditions This study aimed to evaluate the effect of photoperiod on the life cycle and shell morphology of Dysopeas muibum Marcus & Marcus, 1968 under laboratory conditions. To this end, we conducted monitoring growth of the shell, the release of puppies and mortality of 40 specimens undergo natural conditions of temperature, relative humidity and photoperiod, and 80 undergo controlled conditions (40 with long days, and 40 with short days), from birth to 180 days, when the measures of the shell were taken. It was found that the photoperiod had no effect on the indeterminate growth, the relationship between reproduction and growth, iteroparidade and low mortality before and after sexual maturity. The controlled conditions of temperature, relative humidity and photoperiod favored growth, conchiliomorphometrics values higher and fast reach sexual maturity, while the decrease in day length favored fecundity.KEYWORDS. RESUMO.Neste estudo teve-se como objetivo avaliar o efeito do fotoperíodo sobre o ciclo de vida e a morfometria da concha de Dysopeas muibum Marcus & Marcus, 1968 em condições de laboratório. Para tal, foram acompanhados o crescimento da concha, a liberação de filhotes e a mortalidade de 40 espécimes submetidos a condições naturais de temperatura, umidade relativa do ar e fotoperíodo, e 80 submetidos a condições controladas (40 com dias longos e 40 com dias curtos), desde o nascimento até 180 dias de vida, quando foram aferidas as medidas da concha. Verificou-se que o fotoperíodo não teve efeito sobre o padrão de crescimento indeterminado, a relação entre reprodução e crescimento, a iteroparidade e a baixa mortalidade antes e após a maturidade sexual. As condições controladas de temperatura, umidade relativa do ar e fotoperíodo favoreceram o crescimento, maiores valores conquiliomorfométricos e o rápido alcance da maturidade sexual, enquanto a diminuição do comprimento do dia favoreceu a fecundidade. Placostylus fibratus is an endemic endangered species from New Caledonia. This snail is favoured as food, and the harvests for consumption from the wild population increase alarmingly. Thus, local authorities decided to promote research into the rearing methods for P. fibratus. Sixty-three snails from the Isle of Pines, divided into five groups, were subjected to different temperatures (20, 25, and 30°C) and humidities (80 ± 5% and 95 ± 5%) and constant light conditions (12 h:12 h photoperiod). The variables measured were activity levels (percent active animals, i.e. outside the shell) and daily food intake rate (DFIR, in milligrams dry matter per gram of live snail weight). The average proportion of active animals throughout the experiment amounted to 14.3%, with an average DFIR of 1.61 mg/g. P. fibratus were more active (and consumed more) at lower temperatures and higher humidity levels. From 20 to 30°C the activity level dropped from 24.9 to 6.5% and DFIR from 2.7 to 0.33 mg/g (adjusted averages). Overall, P. fibratus seemed capable of tolerating average temperatures (in the region of 25°C) if humidity was high. However, around 30°C they became almost completely inactive, regardless of humidity. The light/dark regime had a very limited impact on the variables under examination, and P. fibratus' nocturnal behaviour in the wild is likely to be explained by the need for favourable temperature and humidity levels.
