CitNetExplorer: A new software tool for analyzing and visualizing citation networks

Abstract: We present CitNetExplorer, a new software tool for analyzing and visualizing citation networks of scientific publications. CitNetExplorer can for instance be used to study the development of a research field, to delineate the literature on a research topic, and to support literature reviewing. We first introduce the main concepts that need to be understood when working with CitNetExplorer. We then demonstrate CitNetExplorer by using the tool to analyze the scientometric literature and the literature on communi… Show more

“…Since we want to look at the influence of scholars, we are more interested in these direct citation networks than measures of similarity. There are several tools that do support visualizing direct citation networks, including Action Science Explorer (Dunne et al, 2012), the Network Workbench Tool (Borner et al, 2010), CitNetExplorer (van Eck andWaltman, 2014), Citeology (Matejka et al, 2012), and PivotPaths (Dork et al, 2012). While some of these tools offer the ability to view a particular paper, including author selection, they are designed to support analysis of a network at a particular point in time.…”

“…We used CitNetExplorer [24,25], a bibliometric tool to visualize the citation network of an ensemble of papers including their references. The tool builds on Eugene Garfield's work on algorithmic historiography and the corresponding program HistCite (the program is no longer in active development or officially supported).…”
