Classification, History, and Future Prospects of Maxillofacial Prosthesis

Abstract: This review presents a classification system for maxillofacial prostheses, while explaining its types. It also aims to describe their origin and development, currently available materials, and techniques, predicts the future requirements, and subsequently discusses its avenues for improvement as a restorative modality. A literature search of the PubMed/Medline database was performed. Articles that discussed the history, types, materials, fabrication techniques, clinical implications, and future expectations re… Show more

“…These materials vary in terms of durability, maintenance, replacement, care, and hygiene, and the levels of concern of the patients wearing cryolite glass prostheses seem significantly lower when compared with those of patients wearing PMMA prostheses 35 . Despite this, PMMA was the material of choice for this study because most professionals use it for ocular prosthesis fabrication 15,16,25,27,34 . In addition, the acrylic prosthetic eye technique is a straightforward one, with good esthetic results and good survival rates 15 …”

“…Globally, the number of blind people of all ages is 39 million, of whom 32 million are 50 years or older and 1.26 million are children under 15 years old 10–12 . Blindness may cause facial disfigurement and/or pain with consequent indication for eyeball removal, 13 and rehabilitation with an ocular prosthesis to repair esthetics and function, contributing to social reintegration and improvement in quality of life 14–16 …”

“…Advancements in technology and introduction of three dimensional scanning techniques using extraoral scanners, reconstructions using DICOM image files, rapid prototyping, and spectrophotometer have enhanced the precision that can be achieved in maxillofacial prosthetics. For intraoral defect, advancements in material like PEEK and modifications in designs allows to achieve more esthetic results by concealing the metal display and enhancing appearance with function [9].…”
