Climatology and trends of tropical cyclone high wind in mainland China: 1959–2011

Abstract: The climatology and trends of tropical cyclone (TC) high wind (TCHW; wind speeds ≥10.8 m s−1) in mainland China during 1959–2011 were studied based on a comprehensive series of surface wind observations from 574 stations. Of these stations, 41 were affected by TCHW more than once per year and were mainly located along the southeast coastline or at some inland mountain locations. The contribution of TCHW frequency to high wind (HW; wind speeds ≥10.8 m s−1) frequency was highest along the southeast coastline of … Show more

“…For Shantou, where the minimum MW24 is 4 m/s, ETP is not triggered consistently with the lowest TR of 0.33. It should be noted that the values of minimum MW24 for Yangjiang, Shanwei, and Zhanjiang, are close to the definition of so-called TC high wind, which is defined as the wind induced by a TC that exceeds 10.8 m/s [52,53]. This shows the above evaluation procedure for triggering consistency is reliable.…”

“…The center of a typhoon rainstorm can drop 100-300 millimeters of rain a day, sometimes as much as 500-800 millimeters. When a typhoon makes landfall, the rainstorm intensity and the possibility of a flood disaster increase due to topographical influences [5,6]. China is frequently affected by typhoons, and, on average, nine typhoons per year make landfall in China [7][8][9].…”

“…Meteorological disasters account for more than 70% of all‐natural disaster losses in the country every year (Gao et al., 2012). Guangdong Province is located on the southeast coast and adjacent to the Northwest Pacific Ocean, with the longest coastline for a province in China, and is extremely vulnerable to landfall typhoons, resulting in huge economic losses and casualties (Ni et al., 2015; Yin et al., 2012). Shenzhen, located on the central coast of Southern Guangdong and bordering the northern part of Hong Kong, is a metropolitan with a permanent resident population of 17.56 million by the end of 2020 (Shenzhen Government Online, 2021).…”
