Clinical and histologic evaluation of platelet-rich fibrin accelerated epithelization of gingival wound

Abstract: The foremost indication for gingival depigmentation is patient demand for improved aesthetics. In most cases after the removal of pigmented layer, the area is covered with periodontal packs. These dressings have no curative properties. They only minimise the likelihood of surface trauma during mastication. However, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) accelerates wound healing by effective neovascularisation and promoting fast cicatricial tissue remodelling. In the present split mouth study, PRF membrane was applied in … Show more

“…21 It is worth noting that cell entrapment is a central attribute of leukocyte-rich fibrin membranes. [23][24][25][26] One study 22 was able to identify a relationship between the concentration of growth factors and the region of the membranes, where the highest levels were evidenced in the buffy coat area, similar to the most cellularized fragment of the present work (Figs. 22 The presence of apparently viable leukocytes, as well as a fibrin network which seems stable for weeks, could contribute to producing a reservoir for controlled release of growth factors and cytokines.…”

“…18 The absence of alterations in the size of these membranes (Fig. 22 The presence of apparently viable leukocytes, as well as a fibrin network which seems stable for weeks, could contribute to producing a reservoir for controlled release of growth factors and cytokines. 14,19 It is important to notice that further studies are necessary to confirm that this apparent evidence of stability by direct observation reflects the maintenance on the integrity of the fibrin network, employing techniques such as SEM.…”

“…The remodeling of fibrin matrix hence produces a more resistant connective tissue thereby reigning PRF membranes superior for all types of superficial cutaneous and mucous wound healing. [26] This truly justifies the term “healing biomaterial” attributed to PRF. [13] In coherence with the aforementioned facts, a statistically significant difference was observed in VAS score, HI, and epithelization test in PRF Group compared to non-eugenol periodontal dressing group in the present study.…”

“…The present study is in accordance with the only study conducted by Bansal et al . in 2016[ 37 ] where PRF membrane along with periodontal pack was placed after depigmentation procedure in 5 individuals. However, the present study had compared two platelet concentrates, i.e., PRF and PRFM and had recruited a larger sample size comprising of 11 individuals.…”
