Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes in a Population With Disseminated Herpes Zoster: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Abstract: This study provides evidence on the relationship between DHZ, the presence of underlying immunodepression, and complications. Immunosenescence may play an important role in the onset of this disease in older immunocompetent patients.

“…A study from the United States showed an increased number of hospital admissions, complications, cost burden, and prescriptions amongst older individuals secondary to VZVI. 30 The higher burden of disease in the elderly has been confirmed by other studies, 31 in which they found that the elderly, even immunocompetent without any detectable triggers were at increased risk of developing VZVI. Further analysis into the cause of this observation leads to the conclusion that immune-senescence might play an important role in the onset of VZVI in older immunocompetent patients.…”

“…Further analysis into the cause of this observation leads to the conclusion that immune-senescence might play an important role in the onset of VZVI in older immunocompetent patients. 31 Therefore, vaccination and immunoglobulins are important aspects for the prevention of VZVI in the elderly and pediatric population. [32][33][34] Our study also showed a slightly higher incidence rate of VZVI in females, which was consistent with previous research, 35 but the reason was still unclear.…”

“…VZV presents with two clinically distinct forms of disease: primary vesicular lesions (chickenpox) and secondary reactivation of HZ, in a restricted dermatomal vesicular patches or plaques (shingles) 2. It is thought that all HZ is associated with viraemia, which immunocompromised patients cannot control 3…”

“…PHN is a chronic and persistent pain. As a typical form of neuropathic pain, patients with PHN often have hyperalgesia, spontaneous pain, sensory loss, abnormal mechanical pain, and other clinical symptoms; collectively, these symptoms can have a severe effect on the physical and mental health of patients as they are often unable to dress and walk (10,11). Clinical manifestations include persistent burning pain, shooting, stabbing, and electric shock tactile pain.…”
