Clinical evaluation of the CA530‐VET hematology analyzer for use in veterinary practice

Abstract: The CA530-VET can be considered useful for routine canine, feline, and equine blood cell analyses. It should not be considered accurate, however, for PLT counts, feline total WBC counts in the subnormal and normal range, and leukocyte differentials, except for granulocytes.

“…10,16 In horses, cats, and dogs, GRAN are predominant in the blood (Table 1), therefore imprecision for this leukocyte subtype is low, and the Mythic 18 showed excellent agreement with both the Sysmex XT-2000iV and the manual WBC differentiation. 17 Agreement in canine and feline LYM counts in the Mythic 18 was not satisfactory. This finding has already been demonstrated for both species in the VetScan HMT, 6 and for canine samples in the CA530-Vet 17 and the Heska CBC (Becker M: 2007, A comparative study of seven in-house and two laboratory hematology instruments.…”

“…It is available with multiple preprogrammed settings for the commonest domestic species. Although comparative studies have been conducted between automated hematology systems and manual techniques using samples of most of the domestic species Science Publications AJAVS (Hennessy et al, 1998;Bienzle et al, 2000;Dawson et al, 2000;Papasouliotis et al, 2006;Roleff et al, 2007), such a comparison has not been made for ovine blood except for a comparison of blood samples from lambs collected into two types of vacutainer tubes, one containing EDTA and the other heparin (Vatn et al, 2000).…”
