Introduction: Lactation is affected by a large number of factors. Equally important as spreading the message of exclusive breast feeding is enabling mothers to sustain it adequately. Considering the ease of implementation and obvious lack of adverse effects, non pharmacologic measures are an attractive option over pharmacologic measures for improving lactation. Methods: A quasi experimental study was conducted for a period of 16 months, to assess the effectiveness of back massage on lactation among immediate postnatal mothers. A total of 220 mothers were enrolled in two groups (Group A, Experimental group-100 cases, Group B, Control group-120 cases). The effect on lactation was assessed based on various parameters, related to the baby. Results: There was significantly higher post feed weight gain, higher mean number of urinations and stools passed per day, longer duration of post feed sleep and better satisfaction in the study group compared to the control group. Conclusion: Back massage was effective in improving lactation in all parameters assessed. This can be recommended for all breastfeeding mothers, especially those facing problems with initiation and sustenance of breast feeding. Importantly, this is a simple method which can be implemented using the existing healthcare system, without straining resources.

RESUMO O leite materno possui inúmeros benefícios para mãe e para o filho. No Brasil, as crianças têm mamado apenas até os 11 meses, sendo depois excluída totalmente essa oferta. Este valor está bem abaixo da recomendação da Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) que é até os 24 meses. Os fatores para o abandono mais citados são a dor e o ingurgitamento mamário. A propósito disso, a auriculoterapia constitui um tratamento para enfermidades físicas e mentais, através de estímulo de pontos do pavilhão auricular. Estes pontos possuem relação com todos os órgãos e meridianos de acupuntura sistêmica. O Sistema Público de Saúde Brasileiro tem mostrado interesse por profissionais acupunturistas, conforme as Portarias n°154 de 2008 e 971 de 2006. O presente trabalho objetivou analisar os efeitos da acupuntura auricular nas complicações da lactação. Um estudo do tipo relato de caso, com abordagem quantitativa, trata de mães que receberam sementes em pontos auriculares que estavam em desordem energética. Dados coletados: dor, redução da inflamação, tempo de tratamento, tempo de cicatrização, apojadura. Após a coleta, as informações foram registradas em banco de dados e submetidas à análise estatística simples. Observou-se que, das sete puérperas estudadas, apenas uma não apresentou melhora.

Stimulation of the nipples can be done with acupoint massage at the acupressure points around the breast. Acupoint massage therapy can help maximize prolactin and oxytocin receptors and minimize the side effects of late breastfeeding by babies. Back Massage at the meridian point will activate the release of endorphins hormone which has an effect on the sense of comfort and relax in the mother so that an increase in milk production. The aims of this research to know the effects of a combination of Back massage and Acupoint massage on increasing prolactin levels. This type of research is experimental epidemiology with a comparison group (post-test only with control group design). This research was conducted at BPM Meli Rosita for 3 months. The sample in this study was postpartum women who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A sample size of 34 people. The measurement parameter had an increase in prolactin. Which included at homogeneity test sample using the Kolmogorov-smirnov test, description analysis to know to mean value, and standard deviation. There was a significant increase in the number of prolactin. The combination of back massage and Acupoint massage affects the increase prolactin level.
