Objective The Tongue Drive System (TDS) is a new wearable assistive technology (AT), developed to translate voluntary tongue movements to user-defined computer commands by tracking the position of a titanium-encased magnetic tracer (Ti-Mag) implanted into the tongue. TDS application, however, is constrained by limited information on biological consequence and safety of device implantation into the tongue body. Here we implant a stainless-steel pellet in the rat tongue and assay pellet migration, tongue lick function, and tongue histology to test the safety and biocompatibility of unanchored tongue implants. Design Water consumption, weight and lick behavior were measured before and for >24 days after implantation of a stainless-steel spherical pellet (0.5 mm) into the anterior tongue body of twelve adult male rats. X-rays were obtained weekly to assess pellet migration. Pellet location and tissue reaction to implantation were determined by post-mortem dissection and histology of the anterior tongue. Results By dissection pellets were distributed across the transverse plane of the tongue. Measures of water consumption, weight, and lick behavior were unchanged by implantation except for a decrease in consumption immediately post-implantation in some animals. By X-ray, there was no migration of the implant, a finding supported by pellet encapsulation demonstrated histologically. Measures of lick behavior were minimally impacted by implantation. Conclusion A smooth spherical stainless-steel implant in the anterior tongue of the rat does not migrate, is encapsulated and does not substantially impact lick behavior. These findings support the implantation of small tracers in the anterior tongue in humans for operating wearable assistive technologies.

Introduzione: in Italia le persone tatuate sono circa 1.500.000, maggiormente nella fascia dâ€™etÃ compresa fra i 18 e i 28 anni, mentre gli italiani portatori di piercing sono circa 1.000.000. A fronte del numero crescente di individui portatori di piercing e particolarmente quelli localizzati nel cavo orale e sulla lingua, emerge la possibilitÃ che lâ€™infermiere di Pronto Soccorso, si trovi a dover gestire la rimozione dei gioielli durante situazioni cliniche anche in regime di emergenza ed urgenza, a mettere in condizioni di sicurezza il tramite ed erogare interventi di educazione sanitaria. Metodo: revisione narrativa di letteratura. Risultati: il tasso di complicanze, riportate nei vari studi pubblicati, relativi al tongue piercing Ã¨ variabile dal 34.9% al 97.6%. Tra le complicanze precoci post inserzioni piÃ¹ comuni si enumerano edema, dolore e sanguinamento alla lingua. Il livello di consapevolezza negli individui circa i possibili danni e complicanze determinate dal portare un gioiello nella lingua, Ã¨ variabile dal 28.2% al 93.5%. La presenza di gioielli di metallo sulla lingua, in bocca, o altre zone corporee puÃ² essere, oltre che fonte di complicanze traumatiche e non, un ostacolo per lâ€™esecuzione di indagini diagnostiche strumentali e/o per lâ€™esecuzione di procedure invasive di elezione o emergenza per la gestione delle vie aeree. Conclusioni: vi Ã¨ la necessitÃ di esplorare e monitorare ulteriormente il fenomeno delle complicanze dei tongue piercing. Inoltre sono necessarie procedure per la rimozione, il mantenimento dei canali dei piercing e lâ€™acquisizione di strumenti adatti per la loro rimozione.

Abstract:Background. The oral an perioral piercing has a long history as part of religious, tribal,cultural or sexual symbolism and nowdays there is a high incidence of oral and perioral piercing in the adolescent population. This practice has a long history as part of religious, tribal, cultural or sexual symbolism. This article reviews current knowledge on injuries or diseases that might be produced by piercing in the oral cavity. We propose a classification to diagnosed the pathologies related to oral an perioral piercing Methods. A search was conducted of articles in PubMed, Scielo published between 1997 and 2007, using the key words ``oral and perioral, piercing ´´, ``oral, piercing and disease", ``recessions and oral piercing´´. It has reviewed about twentythree articles 17 were narrative reviews and 6 case series Results. A review was carried out on the origins of oral and perioral body piercing and its local implications, classifying the different alterations like recessions, systemic implications that it can produce in the oral and perioral cavity. Conclusion. Patients with oral and perioral piercing should be regularly followed up because of the possible development of different types of adverse effects. Clinical implications. Adverse effects of oral and perioral piercing can be systemic, with transmission of infectious diseases such as hepatitis B or C, or can be local, with alteration of oral mucosae or even of dental structures.
