Coenzyme Q<sub>10</sub> Therapy

Abstract: For a number of years, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) was known for its key role in mitochondrial bioenergetics; later studies demonstrated its presence in other subcellular fractions and in blood plasma, and extensively investigated its antioxidant role. “…CoQ10 deficiency could result from: (1) impaired CoQ10 synthesis due to nutritional deficiencies (such as vitamin B6 deficiency, a cofactor essential for CoQ10 biosynthesis); (2) a genetic or acquired defect in CoQ10 synthesis or utilization; or (3) increased tissue needs resulting from a particular disease.
