Coffee polyphenols suppress diet-induced body fat accumulation by downregulating SREBP-1c and related molecules in C57BL/6J mice

Abstract: The prevalence of obesity is increasing globally, and obesity is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. We investigated the effects of coffee polyphenols (CPP), which are abundant in coffee and consumed worldwide, on diet-induced body fat accumulation. C57BL/6J mice were fed either a control diet, a high-fat diet, or a high-fat diet supplemented with 0.5 to 1.0% CPP for 2-15 wk. Supplementation with CPP significantly reduced body weight gain, abdominal and liver fat accumulation, a… Show more

“…[22][23][24][25] Daily ingestion by rodents of nonflavonoid CGAs may mediate fat catabolism as well as green tea polyphenols (flavonoids). 26) However, the relationship between daily CGA ingestion and energy consumption in humans is not currently known.…”

“…The findings in the present study indicated that both the 10% RMR-LM group and 20% RMR-LM group had significant ( * P<0.05) down-regulation of PPARγ mRNA expression in the liver. The expression of several lipogenic genes is regulated by SREBP-1 at the transcriptional level (21). Our evidence suggests that the 20% RMR-LM extract may decrease lipogenesis partly by regulating PPARγ signaling.…”

“…Studies have shown that green coffee enhances energy metabolism and reduces lipogenesis by down regulating SREBP-1c (Sterol regulatory element-binding protein) and related molecules, which leads to the suppression of body fat accumulation [11]. Scientific theories expressed that natural substances found in green coffee prevent weight gain and fat accumulation by inhibiting fat absorption and increasing fat metabolism in liver [23,29].…”

“…Scientific theories expressed that natural substances found in green coffee prevent weight gain and fat accumulation by inhibiting fat absorption and increasing fat metabolism in liver [23,29]. Supplementation with coffee polyphenols can also be effective in weight loss and reduce abdominal and liver fat accumulation by inhibition of macrophages infiltration into adipose tissues [11].…”
