Cogitate, articulate, communicate: the psychosocial reality of technology roadmapping and roadmaps

Abstract: Roadmapping has gained acceptance by technology management practitioners as a key tool in planning and strategy development. Technology roadmapping workshops are essentially a socially facilitated mechanism that solicits a diverse group of participants for their pool of experience and expertise in order to explore the opportunities and challenges facing an organisation. “…This innovation roadmapping also involved exchanging and cocreating roadmaps with suppliers and cocreation partners (Phaal, Simonse, and Den Ouden, 2008). Recent research within this perspective explores the use of workshops in roadmapping (Kerr, Phaal, and Probert, 2012) and reflects on the "roadmap metaphor" in design experiments considering the "roadmap as a boundary object": a vehicle to cogitate, articulate, and communicate across functions (Ewenstein and Whyte, 2009). The present paper builds on this organizational behavior perspective and in particular contributes with a strategic innovation management perspective.…”

“…The toolkit comprises linked modules, each of which serves a function, implemented through a set of workshop procedures Technique A technique is a structured way of completing part of a procedure Particular facilitation techniques are used to implement toolkit procedures in workshops Tool A tool facilitates the practical application of a technique Structured templates are used in the workshops as the primary focus for group-based activities notes and pens (Kerr et al, 2012). These charts are supplemented by simple electronic representations (presentation slides, word processing documents and spreadsheets that are projected or distributed as handouts).…”
