Colon carcinoma metastatic to the thigh—An unusual site of metastasis

Abstract: Metastasis from colorectal carcinoma occurs by either lymphatic or hematogenous spread. The pattern of metastasis in patients with colorectal malignancy has been characterized by numerous clinical, surgical, and autopsy studies. The most common sites of colorectal metastasis are the liver and lung. Only two previous instances of colorectal carcinoma metastatic to skeletal muscle have been reported. The present report documents the third case of colorectal cancer metastatic to skeletal muscle and reviews the ty… Show more

“…15 This may be an important clue in arousing clinical suspicion of metastasis when compared with the more common soft tissue sarcoma, inasmuch as the latter typically present as enlarging, painless soft tissue masses. 29,46,49 On the other hand, the clinical presentation of an isolated soft tissue metastasis overlaps that of soft tissue sarcoma enough that sarcoma was the most common clinically suspected process before biopsy in this series and in the literature. Psoas involvement by metastastic disease is frequently confused with psoas abscess or hematoma, both clinically and radiographically.…”

This possibility seems especially likely given the relatively prolonged survival for the vast majority of those renal cell metastases reported.…”
