“…For periodontal tissue engineering, sufficient supply of autologous cells is of paramount importance for the preparation of transplants. In animal experiments, periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDLCs) (Zhang et al 2007;Lin et al 2008) and bone marrow stroma cell (BMSCs) (Hasegawa et al 2006;Li et al 2008) have been two main cell sources for periodontal tissue engineering. Recent studies have showed that grafted periosteum or periosteum-derived cells (PDCs) could enhance periodontal wound healing, and they promote alveolar bone repair, as well as facilitate periodontal membrane and cementum regeneration (Steiner et al 2007;Mizuno et al 2006).…”

“…BMP-7 has been indirectly delivered through the use of viral particles (2 x 10 10 in large animals , and 1.8 to 2.5 x 10 11 in small animals (Dunn et al, 2005;Zhang et al, 2012b)) and transduced/transfected cells (1 x 10 5 to 5 x 10 7 in large animals (Chaofeng et al, 2013;Zhu et al, 2010), and 1 x 10 5 to 2 x 10 6 in small animals Zhang et al, 2010c)). Zhang et al (2007) demonstrated a 2-fold increase in bone formation after implantation of viral particles, whilst Zhu et al (2010) demonstrated a 2.5-fold increase after implantation of transduced bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) into dog and goat, respectively. Interestingly, the same study by Zhu et al showed that implantation of non-transduced BMSCs also increased bone formation, but to a lesser degree (1.5 fold).…”

“…Most composites grafts focus on merging osteoconductive scaffolds with osteoinductive agents, such as BMP, or with cells (Bueno &Glowacki 2009;Lin et al2010). Nanotechnology improves matrix characteristics for cell adherence, survival and differentiation, delivery vehicle for cell, proteins or gene carriers also improve macro mechanical properties Smith, I. O. et al 2009;Zhang et al 2007). The research of forming a scaffold with organic and non-organic parts, which is mechanically strong, bioresorbable, carries inducer molecules and cells, and will adhere to the newly forming bone and still be affordable, is challenging.…”
