Comments for Current Interpretation EEG Alpha Activity: A Review and Analysis

Abstract: Introduction: Exploring the EEG alpha oscillations generates considerable interest because there is well known its role in cognitive and psycho emotional aspects of human life. However, till now there isn't well determined definition what is alpha activity phenomena and which indices are characterize it. Method: This article focuses on the attempt to determine EEG alpha-activity phenomena, its physical, molecular and morphological nature, to highlight its indices and their role in optimal functioning. “…In addition, the results of this work support our previous conclusion that the performance efficiency is higher when the α and β 2 frequencies are to be con trolled in NFB procedures [7]. There is evidence that learning is more efficient when the individual domi nant frequency of the α rhythm is taken into account [9], and the same might also be true for higher fre quency EEG bands. On the other hand, training to control the β frequencies should be performed with due regard to their functional proximity to the γ fre quency range, which is associated with the processes of intermodal synthesis (binding problem), descend ing control (top down), and long term memory [34,38,60].…”

“…BFB training that uses EEG parameters, or neuro feedback (NFB), has been developed in many studies [7][8][9][10][11]. NFB is actually operant conditioning [12][13][14] wherein a subject controls his/her mental state by reg ulating the characteristics of brain electrical activity, in particular, deeper relaxation can be achieved, for instance, to stop uncontrolled epileptic seizures [15].…”

“…This is also emphasized in the two recent reviews on the origin and role of alpha activity by Bazanova [8] and Bazanova and Vernon [7], where several open questions are presented. A number of researchers speculate on the existence of two or even more alpha sources [7], and growing evidence exists that there is an interplay of alpha activity and activity of other frequency bands in different brain regions.…”

“…There is no doubt that monitoring the dominant activity of the brain -alpha activity -is extremely important for assessing cognitive state of a person. Although it is considered as interpersonal phenomenon, the origin and the role of alpha activity is still not understood [8], [7]. Several interplays between alpha activity and attention, memory, and top-down control are demonstrated in the literature [10].…”

“…By computing the coherence value for different EEG leads, we can study normal brain activity as well as to detect synchronization in schizophrenia, dementia and Parkinson's disease [6][7][8][9]. Phase coherence is characterized by Phase Locking Value [10]…”
