Comparative Study of Body Fluid Cytology Using Cytospin - Ii and Ordinary Centrifuge

Abstract: INTRODUCTION:The cytologic examination of body fluids is a common practice and of distinct value in confirming or disapproving malignant metastatic tumors to the body cavities. It also gives information on specific pathologic processes as tuberculous or otherwise. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The present study was carried out to compare the sediments obtained by ordinary centrifuge and Cytospin II centrifuge using pleural and ascitic fluids as specimen samples. The emphasis was on cell yield and distribution, preserva… Show more

“…Since mesothelial and synovial tumors are rare, this method is useful to detect metastatic malignant cells to the body cavities. The method is more of prognostic value rather than for the early detection or prevention of further tumor growth [2].…”

“…The clinical diagnosis noted in the present study slightly differed from a study by Deshpande AK. et al [2] from Hyderabad where, authors encounter 12 cases (8%) of tuberculous effusions, 8 (66.6%) from pleural and 4(33.33%) from peritoneal cavities.…”

“…Comparable findings regarding the diseases present in the fluids have been documented by Vidushi et al 4 in which 100 samples were studied, out of which 05 were positive for malignancy and 95 were benign. In the study done by Deshpande et al 10 in which 150 samples were studied, out of which 25 cases being positive for malignant cells and 125 being benign. In the study done by Joshi et al, 2 out of 150 samples, 34 were positive for malignancy and 116 were benign.…”

“…The material from body cavities and effusions like urine, pleura, ascitic fluid, pericardial, peritoneal wash and gastric washings and Put these samples in clean air tight centrifuged tube. Rotate the tube at 1500 rounds per minute (RPM) for 5 minutes in Cytocentrifugation (REMI R-8C) [4]. Discard the supernatant fluid .Make multiple smears from the sediments on a clean glass slide.…”
