Comparative study of pharmacological activity of birch bark ethanol extracts

Abstract: Birch is a rich and widely occurring source of substances for medicinal preparations. The previous pharmacological investigation of tinctures from various parts of this plant showed, in particular, promising properties of birch bark extracts [1].The purpose of this work was to select an optimum extractant for birch bark, for which purpose we have used aqueous ethanol solutions of various concentrations. EXPERIMENTAL CHEMICAL PARTThe experiments were performed with dry birch bark extracts obtained using 20, 30,… Show more

“…Different experimental models of ulcer have shown that several mechanisms of action can be involved in the gastrointestinal effects of flavonoids, such as the capture of free radicals, chelation of transition metal ions, the improvement of the enzyme oxidase activity and changes in the levels of protein and non-protein SH compounds, as well as the inhibition of lipid peroxidation. Several flavonoids have shown antiinflammatory properties, without any ulcerative side effect, which is a great advantage in the treatment of peptic ulcer [36,37].…”

“…The bioactivities of Betula species are well documented, in fact the Betula was largely used in human and veterinary medicine to treat various diseases. Betula compounds have a wide variety of properties including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory beyond being antioxidant [9,10,11].…”
