Introduction: Schistosomiasis, caused by infection from Schistosoma mansoni, is a disease that represents an important public health problem for Brazil, especially for states in the Northeast region. Thus, the aim of this study is to present a new epidemiological profile for the disease in a municipality with low prevalence in the state of Alagoas, Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted through a coproparasitological and malacological survey. A structured questionnaire was applied to the study participants to survey possible risk factors and a spatial analysis (kernel density) was used to measure the risk of infection. Results: Of the 347 participants, 106 (30.5%) were infected by Schistosoma mansoni, most of them from the urban area of the municipality (68.9%; 73/106). A 3-fold risk of infection was found for individuals living in the urban area and a risk of 2.15 times for self-declared farmers. Biomphalaria glabrata and B. straminea were the species found in the municipality, but no animals were diagnosed as infected by the parasite. Spatial analysis showed a random distribution of vectors and human cases of the disease, and the formation of two clusters of human cases in the urban area was seen. Conclusions: A new epidemiological profile for schistosomiasis from S. mansoni infection was presented in a municipality of low endemicity: a high proportion of positive individuals in the urban area; presence of snails without positive diagnosis for S. mansoni infection; random distribution of vectors and human cases; and absence of association between classical risk factors and human infection.

O presente estudo tem como objetivo caracterizar o perfil epidemiológico dos casos confirmados de infecção por Schistosoma mansoni em municípios piauienses a partir dos dados das notificações compulsórias da parasitose no Sistema de informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN), entre os anos de 1995 a 2017. Para isso foi realizada uma pesquisa descritiva com caráter retrospectivo através da utilização de dados epidemiológicos secundários. Foi possível identificar um total de 44 casos de esquistossomose mansônica no estado do Piauí. Os portadores de S. mansoni são majoritariamente da etnia parda 36% (n=9), com idade entre 20 e 39 anos (48,48%; n=16), adicionalmente o registro de casos confirmados para sexo, foram 75,76% (n=25) do sexo masculino, residindo principalmente na área urbana 72,73% (n=24 casos), com escolaridade somente do ensino fundamental incompleto 24,24 % (n=8). Com relação a origem dos casos, 62,5% (n=15 casos) foram autóctones sendo que majoritariamente todos os casos alcançaram a cura (87,5%, n= 21). O estudo permitiu conhecer o perfil dos indivíduos piauienses acometidos pela esquistossomose mansônica. Embora o Piauí seja considerado área não endêmica para esquistossomose mansônica, a atenção quanto à transmissão da doença é necessária, visto que é um problema de saúde pública que ainda se faz recorrente, sendo necessário a permanente vigilância epidemiológica e manutenção das medidas de controle da doença.

Objective: The present research performed a clinical and histopathological analysis of female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) cases. This was a descriptive and retrospective study, with a quantitative approach based on secondary databases belonging to Memorial Nestor Piva from Universidade Tiradentes. Methodology: Medical records and biopsies from patients affected with genital schistosomiasis (1984-1994) 75 pathology reports were found, biopsies of feminine genitals, with the respective paraffin blocks and slides. In these three search blocks, to contain sufficient quantity of biological material underwent histological new. For pathological analysis, hematoxylin-eosin, picrosirius Red and Masson's trichrome staining were used. A distribution of cases per year was performed to obtain an average and a percentage distribution among the most affected organs. In addition, the chi-square test was used to establish an association between schistosomiasis and its anatomical location and with other pathologies. Results: An average of four cases per year was obtained and the infection was found in all genital system organs, with its highest concentration in the ovaries followed by the uterus. In addition, there was an association between the parasitosis and cervical metaplasia, uterine tumors and salpingitis. In the histopathological analysis, several granulomas containing Schistosoma mansoni eggs, in productive and curing phases, were observed. Conclusion: It was concluded that ovaries were the most affected anatomical sites and that the presence of genital schistosomiasis may favor the occurrence of associated pathologies, thus causing a high morbidity rate to women's health.
