Comparison of conventional color fundus photography and multicolor imaging in choroidal or retinal lesions

Abstract: The appearance of choroidal and/ or retinal lesions on MCI may be different than that on CFP. Though MCI can provide similar information with CFP for the features of retinal and/ or choroidal lesions including border, halo and drusen; the infrared light reflection on MCI underestimates the extent of the choroidal lesion by 33%.

“… 33 Indeed, choroidal Nevi may appear larger and more prominent in fundus camera based near infrared imaging than SLO short wavelength AF imaging. 34 , 35 We recognize that SLO imaging instruments are expensive but we chose to use them because it has the potential to deliver many types of useful imaging data. Furthermore, IR imaging of the retina is the standard for almost all OCT imaging instruments, including three of the four leading OCT manufacturer Heidelberg Engineering, Optovue, and Zeiss.…”

“…To measure the area of nevus on CFP, the image was imported into Spectralis system and measured as suggested by Muftuoglu et al . [ 2 ] The area of nevus on CFP was 2.21 mm 2 [Fig. 3a and b ].…”

“…[ 1 ] Choroidal nevus presents as round or oval dark brown lesions on fundus. [ 2 ] Though choroidal nevi are benign lesion, they do carry malignant potential, necessitating a regular follow-up to look for any change in their size. Conventional color fundus photography (CFP) has been the modality of choice to document the size and follow-up of choroidal nevus.…”
