Comparison of economic and noneconomic factors in predicting faculty vote preference in a union representation election.

Abstract: faction (Kemerer & Baldridge, 1975;Ladd & Lipset, 1978). The perceived impact of unionization on the conditions of work (specifically, on job security and salary) is generally a better predictor than are actual budgets, faculty turnover, and teaching and research support (Marcus & Zonia, 1982). The compensation distribution structure of an institution and the likely effect of unionization on wages have also influenced support for unionization (Farber & Saks, 1980). Collective bargaining in higher education is … Show more

“…Items used a 7-point response scale (1 = extremely dissatisfied, 7 = extremely satisfied) and scores were obtained by calculating the average of responses to the items. Two items based on those used by Zalesny (1985) addressed respondents' union attitudes toward collective bargaining in acadetnic institutions, namely 'Collective bargaining for faculty is consistent with my professional values' and 'Collective bargaining is an appropriate form of representation for academics' To measure perceived union instrumentality, respondents indicated their agreement with the proposed union's ability to improve seven aspects of faculty employment: academic freedom, tenure procedures, salary, fringe benefits, relations between faculty and administration, faculty participation in university decision making procedures, and support systems. These items were based on those used by Bigoness and Tosi (1984).…”

“…We measured pay satisfaction by having respondents indicate their degree of satisfaction with their salary, their salary compared with salaries of other faculty at the same university, and with the salaries of faculty at other universities. These items were adapted from Zalesny (1985). Items used a 7-point response scale (1 = extremely dissatisfied, 7 = extremely satisfied) and scores were obtained by calculating the average of responses to the items.…”
