Comparison of pulse wave analysis parameters by oscillometry in hypertensive diabetic and nondiabetic patients in a Brazilian outpatient care

Abstract: Introduction: Pulse wave analysis is an emerging approach that analyzes parameters comprising strong predictors of cardiovascular (CV) events and all-cause mortality, especially in patients with high CV risk based on established risk factors. This study used the oscillometric method, provided by the Mobil-o-Graph (PWA-EMI GmbH, Stolberg, Germany) device, to compare data regarding the pulse wave analysis parameters in hypertensive nondiabetic and diabetic patients. … Show more

“…As for the measurement method, the oscillometric has stood out for allowing a new approach to determine arterial stiffness, of which hypertension is an important cause and usually in association with diabetes. In those cases, the impact is even more extensive since it is a morbid condition due to its effects on the arteries ( 48 ) . Thus, individuals with diabetes have a more increased cardiovascular risk than the general population, so the importance of employing validated oscillometric devices for BP monitoring in this population has been emphasized.…”

“…Soon in a BP measurement sequence, the individual waits 10 min at rest in a supine position in a quiet room with stable room temperature. Using a Mobil-O-Graph (I.E.M., Stolberg, Germany), the technician performed pulse wave analyses [ 15 , 16 ]. The individuals performed during the time of pulse wave analysis four BP measurements.…”

“…Since its acceptance by WHO as a major index for DM, its usefulness is regularly questioned [46,47]. A similar situation is with the parameters to characterize AHT [48][49][50]. The same is true with the understanding of the parameters that could be offered instead of HbA1c for better characterization of DM [45].…”
