Comparison of radiofrequency kyphoplasty and balloon kyphoplasty in combination with posterior fixation for the treatment of vertebral fractures

Abstract: Combining posterior fixation with RF-TVA leads to better results of VAS and ODI, whereas the vertebral height restoration was favorable for patients treated with BKP. Cement leakage was comparable between both groups. It was asymptomatic and within reported ranges. Limitations of this study are the patient number and different stabilization instrumentation.

“…Invasive surgery can be an option although may not be the best therapeutic option, because the body status of the elderly patients is usually always poor [23]. For the past few years, the minimally invasive methods of PVP and PKP have been widely used to treat OVCF in order to relieve low back pain and correct spinal deformity [1,2426]. Both PVP and PKP are believed effective and safe to treat OVCF clinically.…”

“…Invasive surgery is a treatment option, but it is not the best treatment method, usually because of the poor body status of elderly patients [ 20 ]. Currently, as minimally invasive methods, procedures of bone cement augmentation, such as PVP, are widely used to treat elderly patients with OVCF [ 21 23 ].…”

“…Today, vertebral augmentation procedures, including percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP), are commonly used in the treatment of OVCFs [ 8 10 ]. Both interventions involve injecting cement into the collapsed vertebral body.…”
