Comparison of salivary hemoglobin measurements for periodontitis screening

Abstract: Salivary hemoglobin (Hb) for screening of periodontitis is approved under the pharmaceutical affairs law of Japan. Two reagents are commercially available for the modified fecal occult blood test: Saliva Hemo Plus and OC-AUTO S Latex Reagent. We simultaneously measured split specimens from 561 samples by using these two methods and compared the differences and agreement between both methods. Moreover, saliva samples were collected from 10 subjects at five time points during the day for analysis of circadian va… Show more

“…Thirteen subjects were excluded from the analysis of efficacy because they did not attend the 12‐week visit for personal reasons, resulting in lack of data. The baseline salivary hemoglobin test indicated gingival bleeding in some subjects, and the principal investigator judged that 25 subjects with salivary hemoglobin levels exceeding the reported cutoff value (2.0 μg/mL) were inappropriate for accurate analysis of the effects of the intervention in healthy persons. The remaining 109 healthy subjects were included in the efficacy analysis as the per‐protocol set.…”

“…The saliva was immediately transferred into a diluent solution with preserving agents and kept at 4°C. Salivary hemoglobin levels were measured using an OC Hemodia Auto III (Eiken Chemical), and the cutoff point for periodontitis was set at 2.0 μg/mL 16 …”

“…), and it was approved as a diagnostic method for periodontal screening in Japan (Okada et al. ). However, the model combining salivary haemoglobin levels and other factors, such as age and self‐reported problems, showed stronger predictive power for the prevalence of active periodontal disease than the one using only salivary haemoglobin (Maeng et al.…”
