The physical and ecological importance of seagrass meadows in coastal processes is widely recognized, and the development of tools facilitating characterization of their structure and distribution is important for improving our understanding of these processes. Mixed (multi-specific) meadows in a Mexican Caribbean reef lagoon were mapped employing a multiparameter approach, using PlanetScope remote sensing images, and supervised classification based on parameters related to the structure of the seagrasses meadows, including the cover percentages of seagrass/algae/sediment, algae thalli and seagrass shoot densities, canopy heights and estimated leaf area index (LAI). The cover, seagrass and algae densities, and seagrass canopy heights were obtained using ground truth sampling, while the LAI was estimated using data obtained from long-term monitoring programs. The maps do not show the differentiation of seagrass species, but ground truthing contemplated characterization of the density of Thalassia testudinum, Syringodium filiforme and Halodule wrightii and their respective LAIs. S. filiforme was the dominant species in terms of shoot density, and T. testudinum was dominant in terms of LAI. In the multiparameter-based map four classes were defined, based on the cover and structural characteristics, and its overall accuracy was very high (~90%). Maps based on sediment cover and LAI alone also had 4 classes, but they were less accurate than the multiparameter-based map (~70% and ~80%, respectively). The multiparameter-based seagrass map provided spatially-explicit data on the abundance and structure of seagrasses, useful for future monitoring of the changes in the meadows, and also for studies of that require data of large-scale meadow structure, such as inventories of associated biota, blue carbon storage, or modelling of the local hydrodynamics.

Rhizopora apiculata is a common mangrove species found in tropical Asia, and it is also widely used by communities living near mangrove forests, including in Indonesia, due to its wood durability. This study aims to assess the status and utilization of R. apiculata, primarily by the fishermen community living near Muara Angke Wildlife Reserve in Jakarta Bay, Indonesia. The density of R. apiculata was determined by placing 100-meter-long transects from west to East in Muara Angke. While the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) of R. apiculata was studied using Landsat 8 satellite images with specific near-infrared and red wavelengths. The utilization of R. apiculata was assessed through interviews with 108 fishermen. The results showed that the west parts of Muara Angke had higher density, NDVI values, and canopy covers, with the R. apiculata density, NDVI, and canopy cover ranges being 3339.5-2856.3 Ha -1 trees, 0.79-0.99 percent, and 90-100 percent. There was a positive relationship between R. apiculata density, NDVI, and cover and the distance to the fishermen's village, decreasing NDVI trends toward villages. NDVI values in R. apiculata populations located far (> 1 km) from villages were higher, while NDVI values in R. apiculata populations located close (1 km) to villages were lower. Low density and NDVI values near the village were linked to fishermen's understanding and use of R. apiculata. This research can help to conserve and sustainably use the remaining mangrove community, primarily in Jakarta Bay.

The mangroves' aboveground biomass significantly contributes to the global carbon cycle or economic and ecological values. This makes knowledge about the spatial extent of the mangroves indispensable for policymakers. The sequence of mangroves’ condition range also requires remote sensing data to update the geographical information and synthesize carbon stock in Bengkulu. Therefore, this study aims to create a spatial distrribution of mangroves and evaluate their carbon stock in Bengkulu City using Sentinel-2 imagery. The semi-empirical method uses Sentinel-2 imagery through NDVI to appraise and picture the mangroves' aboveground carbon stock. An allometric equation was used to compute the mangroves' aboveground carbon stock from field measurements. Non-linear regression was used to establish a connection between the NDVI calculated from the Sentinel-2 imagery and the mangroves' aboveground biomass measured in the field, which was subsequently used for aboveground carbon estimation. The results showed that mangroves mapping could derive overall accuracy of 89.09%, where the high-density class existed in 135.12 Ha of total area. It was also discovered that Sentinel-2 imagery could estimate mangroves carbon stock up to 61%. The carbon stock estimation based on the imagery has a value of 16.3992 – 115.134 t C/ha, while that of field survey data ranges from 19.69 to 326.06 t C/ha. These results showed that Sentinel-2B spectral data is functional and has a good chance of being able to predict carbon stock.
