Complications in Endoscopic Ear Surgery

Abstract: Data from this study confirm the safety of the endoscopic technique, with very low complication rates, indicating that EES is a reliable therapeutic option, in particular, for tympanoplasties, myringoplasties, and stapedoplasties, as well as second look procedures. We have reported our experience with EES morbidity so that it can be compared with data from other centers using the same surgical technique.

“…13 In another study by the same author and his associates, 0.4% had ossiculoplasty graft dislocation and 0.6% had persistent tympanic membrane perforation. 14 The other significant complication is displacement of the tragal/conchal cartilage and subsequent retraction pocket formation. This could be minimized by reducing excessive bone removal for example, at the anterior buttress, which often requires removal when cholesteatoma extends beneath it.…”

“…Comparing our results with the studies of Marchioni et al and Yiannakis et al reveals our complication rate to be higher. 8,10 A possible explanation is the small number of cases used in our study (compared with 825 cases used by Marchioni et al and the 103 cases used by Yiannakis et al).…”

“…Despite these limitations, the complication rates for EES remain low. 10 The aim of this retrospective study is to highlight the indications and ear pathologies for TEES conducted in a hospital in Malaysia, and to analyze possible complications of the procedure. All these findings are important in order to improve the understanding of TEES, given its novelty in otology.…”

“…25 Direct trauma due to onehanded surgical maneuvers and heating caused by the light of the endoscope have been frequently questioned as possible risks for inner ear damage during EES 26 ; however, our results did not support this hypothesis, as the use of the endoscope has proven to be a safe tool in our large cohort, as previously described. 27,28 We did not appreciate any significant discrepancy in hearing results comparing the endoscopic versus microscopic group performed by the same surgeon. Recently, several studies have focused on this topic.…”
