Consistency of alginate impression materials and their evaluation

Abstract: The apparent viscosity of 17 commercially available alginate impression materials was examined using a rheometer. Each material was mixed for 15 s at a temperature of 23 +/- 0.5 degrees C, using a specially designed alginate mixing instrument. The water powder ratio was determined according to the manufacturer's instruction. The mixed alginate paste was immediately transferred to the sample stage of the rheometer or to a commercial perforated metal tray. Over the same time scale adjusted according to the rheom… Show more

“…Alginates were only slightly more difficult, but were ultimately used at greater dilutions than the manufacturers' recommendations (Inoue et al, 1999). Kromopan mixed into the smoothest paste, Traginate and Tare-free ALG were even a little lumpy after 40 seconds of hand mixing, but all materials made adequate impressions within the allotted setting time without problem.…”

“…Alginate impression materials are primarily used for dental or bite mark casts because of their ease of use, low cost and good patient acceptability [1]. There are a number of different alginate materials produced by different companies with different characteristics and factors such as setting times.…”
