Constraint-Shattering Practices and Creative Action in Organizations

Abstract: This study contributes insights on how actors cope with constraints in ill-structured problem solving situations, and what implications this coping has for creative action. To date, most research on constraint handling has treated constraints, regardless of their nature, origin, or role, as external factors that enable or hinder creativity. In contrast, we consider constraints to be inextricably intertwined with all creative action. We focus our study on one specific practice for constraint handling: namely, s… Show more

“…We propose a methodological approach to understand how SPCI practices mold value co-creation and how they can be used to define value propositions. To do so, we apply the conceptual thinking of S-D logic (Vargo & Lusch, 2004, we draw on previous practice theory research (Lombardo & Kvålshaugen, 2014;Sandberg & Tsoukas, 2011;Schau et al, 2009) and we borrow the notions of social field and capital from the sociology literature (Bourdieu, 1987;Bourdieu & Wacquant, 1992). We define value accordingly in terms of the coexistence of diverse forms of capital and currency variations.…”

“…By adopting a relational ontology of the creative process, a new wave of scholarship views social relations as ontologically primary and entities as ontologically derivative (Hjorth, 2005;Lombardo & Kvålshaugen, 2014;Steyaert, 2007). In doing so, organisational creativity is redefined as a process of engagement in creative acts, regardless of whether eventual outcomes are deemed useful (Drazin, Glynn, & Kazanjian, 1999;Driver, 2008;Flexner, 1939;Nayak, 2008).…”

“…Bricolage is one form of constraint-shattering activity that entrepreneurs and the employees in an organization implement (Lombardo & Kvalshaugen, 2014). In the start-up phase, many entrepreneurs who have insufficient resources manage to utilize the existing resources at hand in new combinations.…”
