Contained rupture of a mycotic infrarenal aortic aneurysm infected withCampylobacter fetus

Abstract: Mycotic abdominal aortic aneurysms (MAAAs) are rare entities accounting for 0.65–2% of aortic aneurysms. Campylobacter fetus has a tropism for vascular tissue and is a rare cause of mycotic aneurysm. We present a 73-year-old male patient with contained rupture of a MAAA caused by C. fetus, successfully treated with endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) and antibiotics, which is not previously described for this aetiology. Although open surgery is the gold standard, EVAR is nowadays feasible and potentially represe… Show more

“…[1][2][3] Additionally, several reports suggest that EVAR is a viable and less invasive method for the management of mycotic AAA, with favorable results. [4][5][6] Nevertheless, placing an endovascular graft in an infected area remains counterintuitive in the context of a contained infection. 7,8 It is needless to say that the first line of treatment should be removal of the aneurysm and bypass graft coated antibiotics.…”

“…Otros procedimientos quirúrgicos incluyen la reconstrucción in situ con aloinjertos criopreservados o con venas profundas de las extremidades inferiores 7 . En pacientes con alto riesgo quirúrgico, la reparación endovascular mediante hemodinamia es una alternativa, pero en el contexto de una bacteriemia se asocia a un mayor riesgo de infección del material protésico 22 .…”
