Continuous pressure measurements in the evaluation of patients for laser assisted uvulopalatoplasty

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LUPP) performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. No procedure included tonsillectomy. Obstruction related mainly to the velopharyngeal segment of the airway was defined in 16 consecutive patients by clinical examination, nocturnal polysomnography and pressure measurements. The mean follow-up period was 7 months, range 3-16 months. Using five pressure sensors, four separate upper airway segments could be… Show more

“…The pressure sensors in the pharynx and esophagus were used in our standard set-up for nocturnal polysomnography (PSG), as previously described by us [10] and others [4,13]. In the present study the combined pressure and internal thermistors were used together with the external thermistor located at the patient's upper lip and pulse oximetry for monitoring oxygen saturation.…”

“…Objective results from LUPP in 16 patients have indi cated that obstructions across the soft palate were treated effectively in all obstructive apnoeas and in the majority of obstructive hypopnoeas [18], Apnoea-hypopnoca indices are not available for the patients since only a minority had polysomnography per formed pre-and postoperatively due to the lack of rele vant equipment for sleep studies. Since polysomnography was not performed routinely, we do not have objective data on the severity of snoring and OSAS.…”

“…Using continuous pressure measurement in 16 patients with obstruction located to the soft palate, Skatvedt et al [54] reported improvement in the duration of respiratory events, AHI and microarousal index after LAUP. However, these data should be confirmed.…”
