E-CARP: An Energy Efficient Routing Protocol for UWSNs in the Internet of Underwater Things

With the advance of the Internet of Underwater Things, smart things are deployed under the water and form the underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs), to facilitate the discovery of vast unexplored ocean volume. A routing protocol, which is not expensive in packets forwarding and energy consumption, is fundamental for sensory data gathering and transmitting in UWSNs. To address this challenge, this paper proposes E-CARP, which is an enhanced version of the C hannel-Aware Routing Protocol (CARP) developed by S. Basagni et al., to achieve the location-free and greedy hop-by-hop packet forwarding strategy. Generally, CARP does not consider the reusability of previously collected sensory data to support certain domain applications afterwards, which induces data packets forwarding which may not be beneficial to applications. Besides, the PING-PONG strategy in CARP can be simplified for selecting the most appropriate relay node at each time point, when the network topology is relatively steady. These two research problems have been addressed by our E-CARP. Simulation results validate that our technique can decrease the communication cost significantly and increase the network capability to a certain extent.

Abstract-In sensor networks, the large amount of data nsor reWireless Se composed of a large nu activities are sometimes not negligible in energy consumption generated by sensors greatly influences the lifetime of the network. In order to manage this amount of sensed data in an energy-efficient way, new methods of storage and data query are needed. In this way, the distributed database approach for sensor networks is proved as one of the most energy-efficient data storage and query techniques. This paper surveys the state of the art of the techniques used to manage data and queries in wireless sensor networks based on the distributed paradigm. A classification of these techniques is also proposed. The goal of this work is not only to present how data and query management techniques have advanced nowadays, but also show their benefits and drawbacks, and to identify open issues providing guidelines for further contributions in this type of distributed architectures.

Abstract-This paper presents an approach for seamless integration of hosts in heterogeneous networks in the context of data-stream processing. The integration of multiple heterogeneous hosts from the sensor-node level up to the level of high-performance workstations is one of the most promising concepts for extensive and efficient analysis of streaming data. For controlling such a network, communication between hosts is needed, e. g., to initiate stream processing, to configure queries, and to transmit streams. One of the key challenges is global addressing and transparent yet efficient data exchange despite diverse, differently capable networks involved.For this purpose, we developed a cross-platform overlay network that enables transparent communication between autonomous stream-processing systems on different hosts in miscellaneous networks for both data streams and control commands. The system directly uses underlying native protocols within each network so that the most efficient communication method is applied. Furthermore, global addressing of instances of streamprocessing systems and routing over the individual communication paths is provided.
