Correlation between permanent teeth eruption and nutrition status of 6-7-years-old children

Objective The aim of this study was to determine the association of eruption of permanent teeth of Sindhi children of Pakistan with the consumption of wheat, rice, meat, and milk. Methodology A team of two dentists (one male and one female) and two assistants (one male and one female) was trained and calibrated before the study and visited all the 26 selected schools on the prearranged time and date and all the children from kindergarten 1 to class 8 were screened. Children with at least one “just erupted” tooth were taken out of the class for further examination. Number of days of eating meat, rice, vegetable, and milk in a week along with date of birth and some other personnel information was recorded on a questionnaire sheet. Results One thousand two hundred five cases were collected from 26 schools, located in the city of Larkana and its suburbs. The minimum median value belonged to tooth number 16 and the maximum value was for tooth number 27. Twenty-two out of 28 teeth (79%) showed early eruption who consumed the meat more frequently than lesser time. Twenty-three out of 28 teeth (82%) showed early eruption for the children who consumed the vegetable diet a lesser number of times as compared with more frequent. Nineteen out of 28 teeth (68%) showed delayed eruption for those who consumed the rice a lesser number of times as compared with more frequent. Eighteen out of 28 teeth (64%) showed early eruption for the children who consumed a lesser amount of milk as compared with a greater amount. Conclusion The study concludes that a protein-rich diet accelerated, while calcium, mineral, and carbohydrate-rich food items delayed the eruption of permanent teeth among the children of Larkana.

Hubungan antara Gigi Berjejal dan Status Gizi pada Remaja

Malocclusion is one of the most common dental and oral health problems after caries and periodontal disease. Most of the malocclusions occur in adolescence and manifest as crowding teeth. Malnutrition can inhibit the growth and development of the skull and jaw bones, therefore, the permanent teeth have lack space to erupt resulting in crowding teeth. This study was aimed to determine the relationship between crowding teeth and nutritional status among adolescents in Indonesia. This was a literature review study using three databases, Google Scholar, GARUDA, and Pubmed. Keywords used were crowding, malocclusion, malnutrition, adolescent, Height for Index, BMI, nutritional status, adolescents. After being selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, a critical appraisal was carried out and obtained 8 cross-sectional study literatures. The review showed that there were more literatures stating that there was no relationship between crowding teeth and nutritional status among adolescents. Apart from nutritional status, there were several other factors that could affect crowding teeth in adolescents such as bad habits, history of crowding deciduous teeth, heredity, and socioeconomic status. In conclusion, crowding teeth in adolescents is influenced by nutritional status as well as other factorsKeywords: crowding, nutritional status, adolescents. Abstrak: Maloklusi telah menjadi salah satu permasalahan kesehatan gigi dan mulut yang sering dijumpai setelah karies dan penyakit periodontal. Sebagian besar maloklusi terjadi pada usia remaja dalam bentuk gigi berjejal. Status gizi yang kurang dapat menghambat pertumbuhan dan perkembangan tulang tengkorak maupun rahang yang menyebabkan gigi permanen kekurangan ruang untuk erupsi dan terjadi gigi berjejal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan gigi berjejal dan status gizi pada remaja di Indonesia. Jenis penelitian ialah literature review dengan pencarian data menggunakan tiga database yaitu Google Scholar, GARUDA, dan Pubmed. Kata kunci yang digunakan yaitu crowding, malocclusion, malnutrition, BMI, adolescent, maloklusi, TB/U, IMT, Status Gizi, Remaja. Setelah diseleksi berdasarkan kriteria inklusi dan ekslusi, dilakukan critical appraisal dan didapatkan 8 literatur cross-sectional study. Hasil kajian menunjukkan terdapat lebih banyak literatur yang menyatakan tidak terdapat hubungan antara gigi berjejal dan status gizi pada remaja. Selain status gizi, faktor lainnya yang dapat memengaruhi terjadinya gigi berjejal pada remaja ialah kebiasaan buruk, riwayat gigi desidui berjejal, keturunan, dan status sosial ekonomi orang tua.. Simpulan penelitian ini ialah gigi berjejal pada remaja tidak hanya dipengaruhi oleh status gizi saja namun dapat disebabkan oleh faktor lain juga.Kata kunci: gigi berjejal, status gizi, remaja

The The eruption phase of second permanent molar in children aged 11-15 years in coastal area of pugerIndonesia

Background : The first permanent teeth that erupt in the oral cavity is the first permanent molar, which has a high risk of extraction due to caries. Functionally, permanent second molars can replace the function of permanent first molars. Permanent second molars erupt at the age of 11-15 years. The eruption of teeth can be influenced by environmental factors. One of the environmental factors is the geographical conditions. Geographical conditions, such as in coastal areas, will affect the economic conditions and consumption patterns of people living in the area, so it is possible that this can affect tooth eruption. Aims and Objectives : This study aimed to examine the eruption phase of the second permanent molar in children aged 11-15 in the coastal Puger district, Jember. Study Design : This study is a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional approach. Materials and Methods: The sample was 100 pairs of study models of children aged 11-15 years who lived on the coastal area of Puger. Results : Observed eruption phase of permanent second molars in maxillary and mandibular study models and classified into four phases: 0.00 = tooth not erupted, 0.25 = cusp erupted until quarter of the height of the tooth is erupted, 0.50 = half of the height of the tooth is erupted, 1.00 = tooth has more than half until the whole clinical crown erupted. Conclusion : The results showed that the children on the Puger coast had a faster eruption time, in addition, the mandibular teeth erupted earlier than the maxillary teeth and needed 3 years to reach full eruption.
