“…Decreased platelet MAO activity has been described in association with personality characteristics such as sensation seeking [Demisch et al, 1982;Donnelly et al, 1979;Fowler et al, 1980;von Knorring et al, 1984], impulsivity [Perris et al, 1980;Schalling et al, 1987], and suicidality [Buchsbaum et al, 1977;Gottfries et al, 1980], and perceptual distortion in nonpsychotic subjects [Yehuda et al, 1987]. An examination of platelet MAO activity in BPD subjects could show whether they shared a biological feature characteristic of MDD or of subjects with borderline-like personality traits.…”

“…It has been suggested that both extraversion and sensation seeking have a biological basis (Eysenck, 1967;Zuckerman, 1969Zuckerman, , 1979. In a series of studies, relationships have been found between sensation seeking and low platelet monoamine oxidase activity (MAO; EC 1.4.3.4) (Murphy et al 1977;Schooler et al 1978;Fowler et al 1980), as well as with extraversion in men, using a German inventory (Demisch et al 1982). In the same way, low platelet MAO activity has been related to impulsivity and the avoidance of monotony, personality traits closely related to extraversion and sensation seeking (Perris et al 1980;Schalling & Asberg, 1981).…”

“…One factor of general psychopathology was identified, for which an interaction between sex and platelet MAO activity was found; low-MAO male and high-MAO female subjects scoring higher in the Psycho pathology factor. In a study on a rural community sam ple, a significant negative correlation between platelet MAO activity and Extraversión was obtained for male subjects only [Demisch et al, 1982], while Schooler et al [1978] for a college sample reported significant negative correlations with the General Sensation Seeking scale in both male and female subjects.…”
