Corrosion protection of copper using polypyrrole electrosynthesised from a salicylate solution

Abstract: a b s t r a c tReproducible electrodeposition of adherent and homogeneous polypyrrole was achieved on copper from a salicylate solution. The process was facilitated by the formation of a passive layer which inhibited further dissolution of copper but was sufficiently conducting to allow electropolymerisation. The deposited polymer adopted the characteristic cauliflower morphology. The corrosion protection properties of the coating were assessed using polarisation plots, Tafel analysis, OCP measurements and ele… Show more

“…The EIS diagram of bare copper in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution after 1 h stabilization (Fig.7B inset) is used as a control. The EIS data are presented as Nyquist plots with the experimental data represented by the symbols and the simulated data as continuous traces, which is obtained using the equivalent circuit [34] depicted in the inset of Fig.7B. The simulated data generated using the equivalent circuit is in good agreement with experimental data, which represents a two-time constant model for two merged semicircles at high and low frequencies.…”

“…Organic/polymer coatings [1], oxide layers [2], inhibitors [3], and cathodic protection [4,5] have been widely utilized in marines, pipelines, aerospaces, automobiles, construction industries and so forth. In particular, applying corrosion protective coatings represents an easy and scalable strategy.…”

“…En el caso de i corr los valores son mayores para las muestras recubiertas. La interpretación de estos datos es más complicada ya que la densidad de corriente no puede ser atribuida solamente a la disolución del metal ya que existe una contribución relacionada a la actividad redox del polímero [21,22]. La mejora en la resistencia ante la corrosión también puede ser evaluada mediante la comparación de curvas de polarización en el medio agresivo.…”

“…13 CPs are employed in a variety of applications such as sensors and electrochemical devices, 14,15 actuators, 16 capacitors, 17 batteries, 18,19 light emitting diodes, 20,21 control release devices, 22,23 solar cells, 24 radar and electromagnetic interference shielding, 25,26 and corrosion protection of metals and their alloys. [27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35] Polyaniline (PAni), polypyrrole (PPy), polythiophene (PT), and their respective derivatives are important CPs which have exhibited promise toward mitigating corrosion. 28,29,36,37 Among these, PPy is the most promising candidate for corrosion protection owing to its good conductivity, high environmental stability in its oxidized form, and low toxicity of pyrrole monomer.…”
