Cosmetic and radiological outcome following the use of synthetic hydroxyapatite porous-dense bilayer burr-hole buttons

Abstract: The bi-layer porous-dense HA buttons are useful in preventing cosmetic defects over burr-hole sites on the scalp after cranial neurosurgical procedures. It does not interfere with current radiological imaging methods in the postoperative phase.

“…For example, bulk materials, available in dense and porous forms, are used for alveolar ridge augmentation, immediate tooth replacement and maxillofacial reconstruction [4]. Other examples comprise burr-hole buttons [597,598], orbital implants (including Bio-Eye ® ) [599,600,601,602,603,604,605,606], increment of the hearing ossicles [607,608,609], spine fusion [610,611,612,613] and repair of bone defects [138,614,615]. In order to permit growth of new bone into defects, a suitable bioresorbable material should fill these defects.…”

“…Although these bone defects were usually directly covered by scalp without repair, they may lead to further risks, such as leakage of cerebrospinal fluid or infection [84]. Moreover, the scalp depression at the defect sites also influence cosmetic outcomes after the surgery [85]. …”

“…Autologous bone and many artificial bone grafts were used to repair or fill the defects on the skull [84,85,86]. However, harvesting autologous bone from the inner side of the skull flap reduces its thickness, and the amount of such an autograft is limited.…”
