Cost-effectiveness of computed tomography coronary angiography versus conventional invasive coronary angiography

Abstract: A strategy of CTCA triage in the intermediate-risk group, no imaging test in the low-risk group, and CA in the high-risk group, has good diagnostic accuracy and could significantly cut costs. Medium-term and long-term outcomes need to be evaluated in patients with coronary stenosis potentially misclassified by CTCA due to false negative examinations.

“…Furthermore, it was concluded that coronary CT angiography can be a cost-saving technique [26][27][28] that can help to avoid unnecessary invasive angiograms [27], although these results were found in studies evaluating the cost-effectiveness of 64-slice CT which has lower accuracy estimates than NGCCT.…”

“…It is considered to be the gold standard for the diagnosis of CHD (Wu et al, 2019). However, conventional coronary angiography is an invasive examination method, and the cost of computed tomography coronary angiography is relatively high (Darlington et al, 2015). In rural areas of China, due to the limited medical level, this CHD diagnosis method has not been widely used.…”

“…In patients with acute coronary syndrome and a low to intermediate likelihood, CTA is a safe and effacious alternative to the CCA [ 22 ], showing the potential for additional diagnostic testing [ 23 ]. Beside the diagnostic accuracy, CT may improve the cost-effectiveness in comparison to CCA in patients with an intermediate risk [ 23 , 24 ]. Thus, CTA may represent an alternative first-step-diagnostic tool, if the necessity of coronary stenting is not likely [ 23 ].…”
