Costs and benefits of collaborative remembering

Abstract: Collaborative inhibition, the poorer memory performance of collaborative groups as compared with nominal (noninteracting) groups was measured in the free recall of categorized lists. In Experiment 1, collaborative inhibition was present in four-person groups, but not in pairs of two-person groups, where each was compared with performance in four-person nominal groups. However, on a ®nal individual free recall test, members of two-and fourperson collaborative groups recalled a higher proportion of the list than… Show more

“…In friends, we found no overall post-collaborative benefits. These findings add to prior research suggesting that collaboration can-at least under some circumstances-benefit subsequent individual recall because of the reexposure that occurs during collaborative recall (Basden et al, 2000;Blumen & Rajaram, 2008). Our findings suggest that pre-collaborative factors are an important determinant of these ongoing collaborative benefits.…”

“…In cognitive psychology, the dominant experimental paradigm used to assess the costs and benefits of remembering with others is collaborative recall (Basden, Basden, Bryner, & Thomas, 1997;Basden, Basden, & Henry, 2000;Rajaram, 2011;Rajaram & Pereira-Pasarin, 2010;Weldon & Bellinger, 1997). This paradigm can be used to test the influence of remembering with others both during the collaboration itself and on subsequent individual recall.…”

“…The effects of collaboration on recall can be conceptualised in terms of costs and benefits (Basden, Basden, & Henry, 2000). Typically, collaborative groups recall more than individuals alone, but less than nominal groups.…”

“…However on subsequent individual recall, those who previously recalled in a group are more likely to remember additional items than those who recalled individually, but only those items that were introduced by another group member. People who recall in groups are less likely to recall items that did not appear in the group recall (Basden et al, 2000). The focus of these comparisons is on the amount of information recalled.…”
