Crack Shape Coefficient: Comparison between Different DFOS Tools Embedded for Crack Monitoring in Concrete

Abstract: The article presents research on the performance of different distributed fibre optic sensing (DFOS) tools, including both layered cables and monolithic composite sensors. The main need for the presented research was related to the growing applications of the DFOS techniques for the measurements of cracked concrete structures. There are no clear guidelines on the required parameters of the DFOS tools, which, despite their different designs, are offered for the same purpose (strain sensing). The state-of-the-ar… Show more

“…19,20 By integrating DFOS into the concrete, it is possible to gain valuable insights into the specimen. [21][22][23] First approaches to practical applications of crack monitoring, for example, on tunnel shells [24][25][26] or on bridges, [27][28][29][30] have already been carried out. Cracks on concrete structures can be detected by strain peaks, localized with high spatial resolution and crack widths can be determined.…”

“…For monitoring from zero hour, it is recommended to integrate the DFOS directly into the component. The DFOS can either be embedded in the concrete matrix 30,50,51 or attached to the reinforcement. [52][53][54] For existing structures, the DFOS must be installed subsequently, whereby a stiff bond between the component and the DFOS must be ensured for reliable strain measurement.…”

“…The ES, on the other hand, has a monolithic cross section with a diameter of 3.0 mm. In a pultrusion process, the SM fiber is integrated into polyester (PE) fibers, which are impregnated with a special epoxy resin [22]. Both DFOS have a structured surface to ensure proper mechanical interlocking with the concrete.…”
