Critical review of theoretical models for anomalous effects in deuterated metals

Abstract: We briefly summarize the reported anomalous effects in deuterated metals at ambient temperature, commonly known as "Cold Fusion" (CF), with an emphasis on important experiments as well as the theoretical basis for the opposition to interpreting them as cold fusion. Then we critically examine more than 25 theoretical models for CF, including unusual nuclear and exotic chemical hypotheses. We conclude that they do not explain the data.

“…A neutron output was found also in similar experiments with palladium and titanium cathodes [4]. Several hundred investigations of this phenomenon, named cold fusion (CF), were published (see reviews [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]). Although the results of the first experiments [3,4] were considered not conclusive and in many works they were not reproduced, the following development of measurement techniques and numerous new experiments make an impressive case in favour of the reality of producing nuclear reaction products and excess heat release at certain runs conditions.…”

“…Measurements of thermal effects during electrolysis of solution based on heavy water (deuterium oxide) making use of palladium electrodes have been published in over 100 works (see reviews [1][2][3][4][5]). Some authors reported the excessive heat release as compared with the energy consumption by the electrolysis.…”

“…In the meantime, a report on the observation of electrolytically induced cold fusion of deuterium was published [ 37 ]. Predictably, a plethora of theoretical papers aiming at the explanation of this phenomenon soon appeared [ 38 ].…”
