Crystal growth, optical, mechanical and electrical properties of organic NLO material γ-glycine

Abstract: Single crystals of organic non-linear optical material, γ-glycine have been grown by gel method for the first time. The γ -phase is confirmed by single crystal XRD. The presence of various functional groups of γ-glycine are confirmed by FTIR. The UV-Vis-NIR spectrum reveals the high percentage of transmission of the sample in the entire visible region. The SHG of γ-glycine is confirmed by Kurtz powder technique. TGA-DTA studies indicate that the crystal is structurally stable upto 170 o C. Microhardness invest… Show more

“…The g-form is thermodynamically the most stable form at room temperature but transforms to the a-form at high temperatures (165-175 1C) [19][20][21]. The growth of g-form crystals can be from aqueous solution or gel in the presence of additives [22], from supersaturated solution irradiated with plane-polarized laser light [23], or from surfactantbased microemulsion and lamellar phases [24]. Previous studies [19][20][21] have already investigated the effect of additives on the crystal morphology and polymorphism of glycine.…”

“…The Vickers microhardness number was calculated using H v ¼ 1.854 P/d 2 (kg/mm 2 ), where H v is the microhardness number, P is the load in kg and d is the diagonal length of the indenter impression in mm. The hardness value of GLS is found to be 389 kg/mm 2 at the load 0.025 kg, whereas for g-glycine at the same load H v is found to be 38 kg/mm 2 [14]. The present investigation indicates that the mechanical strength of GLS is higher compared to that of starting material, glycine.…”

“…25 The glycine (amino acetic acid) has the molecular formula NH 2 CH 2 COOH and is the simplest amino acid, optically inactive and exist as a zwitterion in solution. 26 The chemical structure of the compound 3 can be the combined product of the junction of the 4-butyl-picolinic acid with the glycine resulting in its acidic and basic caractheristics present.…”
